Behind the design
In the early 1900s, Joseph G. Butler, Jr. had a vision for an institution devoted to curating and preserving the art his young America would produce: one of the first museums devoted entirely to American art.
Knowing that art would one day rank among the greatest in the world, he commissioned McKim, Mead & White to design an architectural masterpiece to show it off. The original Butler building was officially dedicated in 1919. Here it is on a tee, The Butler Institute of American Art, from the arched entry to the tree out front.
