In the 1930s, Avalon Gardens emerged on Belmont Ave post-Prohibition, becoming a cherished eatery in Youngstown. Founded by Gennaro and Lena Massullo, grandparents of Anne Massullo-Sabella, owner of Avalon Downtown Pizzeria, it gained fame for its warm ambiance and exceptional cuisine. After 40 years, the Massullos sold to the Sabellas in 1970, leading to the introduction of iconic Youngstown-style pizzas by Michael Sabella and Robert Smith. This revitalized the restaurant, which closed in 2010 but paved the way for Avalon Downtown Pizzeria on W Federal, carrying forward the tradition. Lorenzo, Anne's son, learned the pizza-making art from Smitty, ensuring the legacy lives on through painstakingly crafted pizzas, made-from-scratch dishes, and a vibrant community atmosphere. Today, Avalon Downtown Pizzeria stands as a symbol of Youngstown's culinary heritage and camaraderie.
