Behind the design

Avalon's story starts in the 1930s, when Gennaro and Lena Massullo opened Avalon Gardens on Belmont Ave just after Prohibition and turned it into a Youngstown favorite known for its warm atmosphere and great food.

In 1970, the Massullos sold to the Sabellas, and Michael Sabella and Robert Smith introduced the Youngstown-style pizzas that made the place iconic. Avalon Gardens closed in 2010, but it paved the way for Avalon Downtown Pizzeria on West Federal, owned by the Massullos' granddaughter, Anne Massullo-Sabella. Her son Lorenzo learned the art of the pie from Smitty, so every pizza is still crafted with care and the kitchen still makes it from scratch. The shirt has it all: a slice in shades, 17 West Federal Street, hand sheeted daily, and the only title that fits, The Pizza of Youngstown.
