Behind the design

The Hardhats were Youngstown's most beloved semi-pro football team, playing in the Middle Atlantic Football League from 1972 to 1981.

After building a 38-6 record through 1974, the money ran out and they sat out 1975. The original owners handed the equipment to the players and let them keep the name, and the community kept them on the field from there. Mostly local guys, always hard-nosed, the Hardhats played their last season in 1981.

Fun fact: Youngstown's own Ed Craft holds the team record with 32 sacks in 1978.
