The Hardhats were Youngstowns most beloved Semi-Pro Football team, which competed in the Middle Atlantic Football League (MAFL) from 1972-1981. However, after the team's 3rd successful season in 1974 (38-6 franchise record), financial support diminished and the Hardhats didn't field a team in 1975. When the ‘76 season rolled around, the team's former owners donated the equipment to the players and allowed the Hardhats to keep their name, but from that point on, the team was funded by different local community groups and individuals. The team was comprised of mostly local talent and were always known as a hard-nosed, tough as nails type football team. The team’s final season was in 1981 due to a lack of financing. Now, 35 years since their disbanding, we commemorate our favorite hometown Pro Football squad.
Hardhats Fun Fact: The record holder for sacks in a season is Youngstowns own Ed Craft. In 1978 he recorded 32 sacks on the year.
