In 1885 George Jacob Renner Jr. purchased a brewery on Pike St. for $4,800. At the time the brewery was sitting empty for two years, however the last owner was producing 1,800 barrels of beer pr/yr. In 4 short years he grew the value of the business to $75,000 and would eventually become Youngstown’s longest operating brewery. Although in 1889 a tragic fire would destroy the entire operation. At this time rebuilding of the new facility (which would have the capacity to produce 18,000 barrels per/year) began. The new brewery is considered a “model in its class”. The Renner Brewing Co. would again face hardship and persevere. Prohibition (1919-1933) was survived mainly due to the company's real estate holdings. When prohibition was repealed in 1933 Renner spent $250,000 refurbishing and modernizing his brewery. They quickly started producing various popular brands of beer.
